Germany Bolsters Ukraine's Air Defence with State-of-the-Art Skynex Systems

In a significant move to strengthen Ukraine's air defence capabilities amidst ongoing conflicts, Germany has delivered the highly advanced Skynex air defence system to Ukraine, marking an important moment in military aid and cooperation.

Developed by Rheinmetall, the Skynex system represents the latest in short-range air defense technology. It's a modular, mobile system designed for rapid deployment and high effectiveness against a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and particularly UAVs/drones.

Key to the Skynex system is its flexibility and integration capabilities. The system can seamlessly integrate with various sensors and effectors and is adaptable according to the specific mission requirements. It features the Oerlikon X-TAR3D radar for situational awareness and detection, capable of tracking targets up to 50 km away.

This radar is connected to a command post equipped with the Oerlikon Skymaster information and control system, which can control up to four 35mm Oerlikon Mk 3 Revolver Gun air defence cannons.

A standout feature of Skynex is the use of Advanced Hit Efficiency and Destruction (AHEAD) ammunition. This innovative ammunition releases a cluster of tungsten sub-projectiles at an optimal distance from the target, determined by an integral laser rangefinder, significantly increasing the effectiveness of fire against various aerial threats.

The decision to provide Ukraine with the Skynex system was announced by Germany in December 2022, with a contract valued at approximately €182 million ($200 million). The delivery of these systems is part of a broader package of military aid from Germany, which includes armoured vehicles, ammunition, and various defence systems.

This aid underscores Germany's ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. As the war continues, the addition of the Skynex systems is expected to significantly enhance Ukraine's air defence capabilities, particularly against the increasing use of drones in warfare. With its advanced technology and rapid deployment capabilities, Skynex stands as a potent symbol of international solidarity with Ukraine and a robust response to evolving military challenges in the region.
