Britain Must Prepare for War to Preserve Peace

News of War Staff Writer

A recent report by the New Bletchley Network, a group of distinguished military experts and leaders, has called for an immediate and comprehensive reform of the British Army to enhance its credibility and effectiveness in deterring potential conflicts. The report, titled "Rebuild The Army Now – to Prepare, Prevent, Deter War," was released on February 27, 2024, and comes as a wake-up call for the post-election Prime Minister and Defence Secretary.

The panel, which included former NATO Secretary General Lord George Robertson, former Commander Joint Forces Command General Sir Richard Barrons, and former Defence and Army Chief General The Lord David Richards, among others, highlighted the urgent need for a "New Model Army" (NMA) to address the diminished fighting power and morale of the British Army over the past two decades.

According to the report, the British Army's credibility has been weakened to the point where it is no longer graded as 'Tier 1' by NATO, indicating that it is not considered "ready to fight now." To regain its standing and effectively deter potential adversaries, the panel recommends a comprehensive overhaul of the Army, including:

  1. Focusing on preparing for high-intensity war fighting and deterrence in the Euro-Atlantic area.

  2. Prioritising the well-being and support of military personnel and their families.

  3. Increasing the size and readiness of both regular and reserve forces.

  4. Investing in modern equipment, enablers, ammunition, and sustainment.

  5. Fostering innovation and agility to keep pace with the digital age.

  6. Streamlining defense acquisition and supply processes.

  7. Reconfiguring top security architecture and command and control arrangements.

  8. Reconnecting the Army with communities and making it an attractive career choice for younger generations.

The report emphasises the need for bold decisions and a concerted effort across the government to deliver these reforms effectively and efficiently. The panellists suggest that an overarching task force, similar to the one used for the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, may be necessary to ensure the timely implementation of these changes.

As the UK faces an increasingly complex and uncertain global security environment, the New Bletchley Network's report serves as a critical reminder of the importance of maintaining a strong, credible, and well-prepared military to prevent and deter potential conflicts. The post-election government will need to carefully consider these recommendations and take decisive action to rebuild the British Army for the challenges ahead.
